Fully embracing insanity.

I can’t help it. I just love hexagons!

Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

In addition to the super rad vintage hex quilt I picked up while thrifting a while ago, I also found a bag of 106 canvassy white squares for $3. (This is a huge deal in my neck of the woods. Thrift stores around here aren’t always very thrifty.) So I’m using them to back my little hexy flowers.

I really had no intention of making a hexagon quilt. Ever. In my life. But I guess Goodwill decided it was meant to be?

This is your lap.

Actually, it’s my lap. The impossible has happened.

After mentally accepting the notion that I might be able to talk myself into making some hexagons, and after going so far as turning to my husband at the county fair and asking, “Do you like these? Do you think you might want to learn to make them?” like the shamelessly lazy cow that I am, I found a vintage 36″ x 42″ hexagon quilt at Goodwill today.

Pardon me, I’m still in awe.

Threads. Thrift. Thursday.

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Apparently, news of the Doll Quilt Craze hasn’t reached my local Bargain Box, because not only was I able to score this cutie; I was able to score it for $2!!!

It’s even reversible!

So, yeah, major score, and inspiration, too - I’ve been meaning to make quilts for my Blythes, but wasn’t sure where to start with dimension and color. This just so happens to be the perfect size to keep Pres. Roslin warm in sick bay. (Yes, I know her eyes are the wrong color. I’m working on that.)

Speaking of BSG, I got some good press this week, which thrilled me to no end. Not because it’s such a huge deal in and of itself, but because there are so many blogs/websites/publications that are for crafters, by crafters, about crafters that getting attention from a totally unrelated site - specifically, sci-fi-geek-unrelated - was a huge, huge treat.

And, finally, since we’re just about to hit the end of February, I want to point out some serious quilty goodness from the Threads Together flickr group. I honestly can’t believe I own these blocks!

Which leads me back to the best quilting advice I’ve stumbled upon - USE the fabrics you love the most! I hung on to these for a couple of years, terrified of cutting into them. Finally, I left the job to some people who weren’t quite as emotionally attached and, voila! Seriously, having this quilt is going to be so much nicer than having all this yardage stacked up in my studio. Something to remember for the future!

Vintage Sheet Lovefest

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Man, this vintage sheet love is going viral!

One of my favorite aspects of vintage sheet use is that you can get the same one over and over. I was instantly saddened by using my pretty pink rose sheet to back this quilt, but was able to pick up another on etsy… plus the same print in a yellow colorway! So, sooner or later, expect to see some wholecloth quilts from these.

I could have gotten a lot crazier with the sheet-buyin’, but my Paypal account is a tad worn out after show application fees and some other supply needs, so I restricted myself to some fat quarters. Oh, how I love these!

Not really what I originally had in mind when I initially started planning a very sweet, muted palette like these, but I am nonetheless in love - and looking forward to piecing something super sunny, like Jeannine’s cute WIP!

For more inspiration - not that we need it, with all these gorgeous sheets around - check out the vintage sheets Flickr pool. Yum!

Thrift Thursday: Highland Fling!

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

I picked up this pitcher the Thursday before Christmas, but, for the usual reasons, didn't get a chance to photograph it till just now.  My apologies - this was a great find.

Granted, it set me back ten whole bucks, but that's what I get for living and shopping in one of the most chichi areas in the country, and refusing to do much driving outside of it.   And I am going to USE this bad boy, chickens.  I don't mind admitting it - Hambone and Jennicakes love cocktail hour.

The most fun thing about this pitcher are the recipes : Martinis for 4 or 8, Manhattans for 4 or 8, (nothing new there) and Highland Flings for 4 or 8.

Um, Highland WHATS?

Why have I never heard of those?  I thought I'd tasted everything?  And is it me, or are Scotch, vermouth, and lemon juice not exactly a traditional Scottish recipe?

No matter.  I love this pitcher.  I can't wait to try it out.

WIP Friday - Frame

Remember that frame from yesterday? It's a step closer to its final incarnation. Just added a coat of paint, and I'll watch it dry while the sun goes down…

Thrift Thursday: fabric and frame

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

fabric and frame, originally uploaded by Hambone and Jennicakes.

I had some serious luck today! I thought I'd do a little thrifting inasmuch as it's Thrift Thursday, and look what I found in the shop where I usually have the least good luck - an empty vintage frame, and a big piece of vintage fabric!

I've been looking for something EXACTLY like the frame, so if it doesn't look like much, never fear - I have big plans. And I just couldn't pass up the fabric. it appears to have some very light food staining on it (I know, WTF?, right?) and has been hemmed, so I'm guessing it was a tablecloth, but I want to launder it before further examination. It might be a great funky cover for one of my many folding tables.

We shall have to see.

Introducing Thirft Thursday!

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Thrift Thursday was born this week, thanks to the clever and talented Carrie Sommer. The best part of her endeavor? It's totally self-explanatory. I've been thrifting since I was 16, and now, on Thursdays, I show you pics of my scores.

Good times.

I bought this Frank Sinatra/Tommy Dorsey album for about $2 almost 10 years ago, and I've always integrated it into my decor. I love the colors and the very 50s hyperreal paint job - perfect for placing next to my enormous painted La Dolce Vita poster.

It's also a great way to keep a big picture of Frankie around without looking like a weird mafia princess or something. I mean, I love my Frankie, but my living room is not the back room at the Badabing, y'know?
